Dagger
Bidjogo, Bissagos Islands, Guinea Bissau
Iron, wood, brass, copper
Early 20th century
This short sword has a very distinctive handle that incorporates many geometric elements, and comes from the Bidjogo of Guinea Bissau.
Off the shore of Guinea Bissau lie the 88 islands that comprise the Bidjogo archipelago (only 20-23 of them are permanently inhabited). Its population lives primarily from fishing and rice farming. While there is evidence that the Bidjogo archipelago was inhabited as far back as the mid-15th century, little is known about the people’s customs and ceremonies (Bacquart, The Tribal Arts of Africa, 1998).
