Ceremonial Slot Axe with Square Head
Makua, Tanzania / Mozambique
Iron, wood
Early 20th century
There is considerable variation among slot axes of this type, but most can be distinguished by their large (often square) head that is decorated with geometric patterns.
The Makua (also known as the Wamakua or Makhuwa), live along the Ruvuma River, which acts as the natural border between Tanzania and Mozambique. Because of this, the Makua often maintain cross-border family and cultural ties.
