Pair of Ceremonial Axes Mànzhi
Fali / Kapsiki / Margi, Nigeria
Brass
Early 20th century
These solid-brass axes known as Mànzhi were used ceremonially, and were the prerogative of the Bana, Fali, Kapsiki, and Margi. The shaft and blade of the axes were cast in one piece, and there was no special shafting. Other examples were made of iron or aluminum (Wente-Lukas, Die materielle Kultur der nicht-islamischen Ethnien von Nordkamerun und Nordostnigeria, 1977).
