Pair of Scarification / Razor Blades
Mossi / Bobo, Burkina Faso
Iron
Late 19th / early 20th century
Scant data about these rare miniature blades exists. They have been described as being used for scarification, for cutting grasses, and for cutting leather by cobblers (Roy & Wheelock, Land of the Flying Masks, 2007; Blandin, Fer Noir, 1992).
In "Bows, Arrows, and Spears of Africa," Wiethase illustrates what he calls a "ritual bow" which has one of these scarification blades "symbolically attached" (2022).
