Group of Geometric Posts
Nupe, Nigeria
Wood
Early 20th century
The entrance veranda of a Nupe palace had a slanting thatched roof supported by a vast array of carved posts. Not uniform in design, they were fairly short as they often rose from an earthen pedestal, and openings in the thatch were cut out for the doorway. Sometimes this was high enough to admit a horse and rider. These Moslem people used only geometric designs on the posts, although their carvers also produced representational art (Ginzberg, African Forms, 2000).
