Decorated Male Torso
Bankoni, Mali
Terracotta
12th - 16th century C.E.
Contemporary with the other civilizations of the inland Delta (12-16th century), the style of Bankoni sculpture is distinguished, on one hand, by especially long upper parts of the bodies with comparatively simply-modeled faces, but on the other hand, there are also unusually crudely modeleed figures with huge feet and hands, both of which possess a special charm (Schaedler, Earth and Ore, 1997).
Acquired by James Willis from Joseph Knopfelmacher (NYC) in 1977.
