Embroidered raffia
2021
Futur-Velours.com is a non-profit organization that pairs women who make traditional embroidered raffia textiles with artists, designers, collectors, and institutions to make innovative new creations with a nod to classic Shoowa designs. I commissioned them to make this textile in 2021: a traditional Shoowa (that the artist could design in any way she wanted) with a large abstract "E" in the center. The E comes from a letter my father wrote to me years ago, and is the logo used on my inventory stickers.
My textile was designed and hand-made by Ida Bulape, whose profile can be seen here. According to Bren Heymans, who is the founder of the organization, Ida was paid $150 for this work. The price these artists normally receive for a Shoowa textile at the local market is $15, and they seldomly sell one.
