Ceremonial Kerchief
Dida, Ivory Coast
Woven raffia filaments, natural dyes
Early 20th century
Among the most painstakingly difficult textiles to manufacture, Dida textiles are both rare and ingenious. The colors were produced from natural dyes: shrub roots (yellow), tree roots (red), ground manganese and leaves (black). The production of Dida ceremonial textiles ceased in the first half of the 20th century. This piece has been stretch-mounted on a custom wood frame. Ex. Andres Moraga.
