Arm Dagger in Sheath
Lotuko / Toposa, Sudan
Iron, wood, leather, brass
Late 19th / early 20th century
Both the Toposa and Lotuko cultures utilized arm daggers as functional tools as well as symbols of cultural identity. While specific details on Lotuko daggers are scarce, their design and function was related to Toposa daggers, reflecting their shared cultural values and aesthetics.
The Lotuko and Toposa are a Nilotic ethnic groups in South Sudan, living in the Eastern Equatoria state. They have traditionally lived by herding cattle, sheep and goats, and in the past had a tradition of low-level warfare (usually cattle raids) against their neighbors (Pitt Rivers, Collections online, 1940.12.605.1; Wikipedia, “Toposa People”).
