Cane Shield with Metal Disc
So / Bati / Binja / Budja, D.R. Congo
Cane (rush), wood, iron, brass, leather, rope, string
Early 20th century
This shield was found among the Bati, Binja, Budja, So, and other peripheral cultures. It was called Kombe among the Bati and Fala among the Binja. A thin sheet of wood is inserted between each horizontal seam and between the front and back vertical strips of heavy reed. The iron discoid attachment that protects the center of the shield and handle originated among the Ngbandi, who called it Ngbengbe (Baur & Elsen, Guba: Wooden Shields of the Congo Basin, Vol. 2., 2004).
